Brief Description of Hafnium carbide powder HfC:

Hafnium carbide ( HfC) is a chemical compound of hafnium and carbon

With a melting point of about 3900 °C it is one of the most refractory binary compounds known.

However, it has low oxidation resistance, with the oxidation starting at temperatures as low as 430 °C

Hafnium carbide is usually carbon deficient and therefore its composition is often expressed as HfCx (x = 0.5 to 1.0). It has a cubic (rock-salt) crystal structure at any value of x

Application of Hafnium carbide powder HfC:

    1. Used for preparation of ultra-high temperature ceramics
    2. The reactant in the synthesis of hafnium-containing organometallic polymers
    3. Used as an additive in alloys
    4. Used in coatings
    5. Widely used in microelectronics, semiconductor, aerospace high-temperature resistant material, coating materials, ceramic materials, ceramic target material, etc.

They are extremely hard, brittle, refractory ceramic materials with metallic electrical conductivity. They appear as brown-gray powders, which are usually processed by sintering.

Being important cermet materials, tantalum carbides are commercially used in tool bits for cutting applications and are sometimes added to tungsten carbide alloys.

The melting points of tantalum carbides peak at about 3880 °C depending on the purity and measurement conditions; this value is among the highest for binary compounds. Only tantalum hafnium carbide may have a slightly higher melting point of about 3942 °C, whereas the melting point of hafnium carbide is comparable to that of TaC.

    Tantalum Carbide Application:

    Tantalum Carbide Powder Applications

    1. Tantalum carbide is often added to tungsten carbide/cobalt (WC/Co) powder attritions to enhance the physical properties of the sintered structure. It also acts as a grain growth inhibitors preventing the formation of large grains, thus producing materials of optimal hardness.
    2. It is also used as a coating for steel molds in the injection molding of aluminum alloys. While providing a hard, wear-resistant surface, it also provides a low friction mold surface.
    3. Tantalum carbide is also used in the production of sharp instruments with extreme mechanical resistance and hardness.
    4. It is also used in tool bits for cutting tools.

Tantalum carbide is widely used as a sintering additive in ultra-high temperature ceramics (UHTCs) or as a ceramic reinforcement in high-entropy alloys (HEAs) due to its excellent physical properties in melting point, hardness, elastic modulus, thermal conductivity, thermal shock resistance, and chemical stability, which makes it a desirable material for aircraft and rockets in aerospace industries.

Nanochemazone specializes in producing high purity Tantalum Carbide Powder with the smallest possible average grain sizes for use in the preparation of pressed and bonded sputtering targets and in Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) and Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) processes including Thermal and Electron Beam (E-Beam) Evaporation, Low-Temperature Organic Evaporation, Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD), Metallic-Organic and Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD). Powders are also useful in any application where high surface areas are desired such as water treatment and in fuel cell and solar applications. Nanoparticles also produce very high surface areas. Our standard powder particle sizes average in the range of – 325 mesh, – 100 mesh, 10-50 microns, and submicron (< 1 micron). We can also provide many materials in the nanoscale range.

    Molecular Formula ZrB2
    Molecular weight 112.85 g/mol
    Molecular weight Powder
    Appearance Black Powder
    Color 6.09 g/cm3
    Density 3,000 °C
    Melting Point 6000°C

    Zirconium Diboride Nano Powder Description

Zirconium Diboride Nano Powder (ZrB2) is a highly covalent refractory ceramic material with a hexagonal crystal structure. ZrB2 is an ultra-high temperature ceramic with a melting point of 3246 °C. This along with its relatively low density of ~6.09 g/cm3 (measured density may be higher due to hafnium impurities) and good high-temperature strength makes it a candidate for high-temperature aerospace applications such as hypersonic flight or rocket propulsion systems.

It is an unusual ceramic, having relatively high thermal and electrical conductivities, properties it shares with isostructural titanium diboride and hafnium diboride. ZrB2 parts are usually hot pressed (pressure applied to the heated powder) and then machined to shape.

Sintering of ZrB2 is hindered by the material’s covalent nature and presence of surface oxides which increase grain coarsening before densification during sintering. Pressureless sintering of ZrB2 is possible with sintering additives such as boron carbide and carbon which react with the surface oxides to increase the driving force for sintering but mechanical properties are degraded compared to hot-pressed he extremely rapid heating rates can result in incomplete reactions between Zr and B, the formation of stable oxides of Zr, and the retention of porosity.

Stoichiometric reactions have also been carried out by reaction of attrition milled wearing materials by grinding Zr and B powder and then hot pressing at 600 °C for 6 h, and nanoscale particles have been obtained by reacting attrition milled Zr and B precursor crystallites 10 nm in size.

The reduction of ZrO2 and HfO2 to their respective diborides can also be achieved via metallothermic reduction. Inexpensive precursor materials are used and reacted according to the reaction.
