Scandium fluoride (ScF3) powder is a white ionic compound with a cubic crystal structure and is slightly soluble in water. Scandium fluoride is an insoluble source of scandium used in oxygen-sensitive applications, such as metal production. Fluoride has multiple applications in current technology and science, from oil refining and etching to synthetic organic chemistry and pharmaceutical manufacturing. For example, researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics used magnesium fluoride in 2013 to create a novel mid-infrared optical frequency comb composed of crystalline micro-resonators, an advance that could lead to future developments in molecular spectroscopy. Fluoride is also commonly used for alloying metals and optical deposition. Scandium fluoride is usually available immediately in most volumes.
