Brief Description of Silicon Nitride Si3N4 Powder

Silicon nitride is a chemical compound of the element’s silicon and nitrogen.

Si3N4 is the most thermodynamically stable of the silicon nitrides.

Hence, Si3N4 is the most commercially important of the silicon nitrides and is generally understood as what is being referred to where the term “silicon nitride” is used.

It is a white grey, high-melting-point solid that is relatively chemically inert, being attacked by dilute HF and hot H2SO4

It is very hard (8.5 on the Mohs scale).

Color depends on the type and particle size.

Silicon Nitride (Si₃N₄) is a high-performance white to gray crystalline powder with a melting point of 1900 °C and a density of 2.2–3.5 g/cm³. It exists in two crystalline forms: α-Si₃N₄ (hexagonal structure) and β-Si₃N₄ (crystalline structure). The material exhibits exceptional hardness, high-temperature stability, and resistance to oxidation, making it one of the most important structural ceramics available today.

When pure, Si₃N₄ appears white; impurities or excess silicon can cause a gray coloration.

  • Hydrolyzes slowly in strong acids, producing ammonium salts and silicon dioxide.
  • Soluble in hydrofluoric acid, resistant to dilute acids.
  • Corroded slowly by strong alkalis; molten alkalis rapidly convert it to silicates and ammonia.
  • At >600 °C, can reduce metal oxides such as PbO, ZnO, and SnO₂, releasing nitrogen oxides.
  • Retains strength up to 1200 °C; decomposes only above 1900 °C.
  • Exhibits excellent corrosion resistance against most inorganic acids, alkalis, and organic acids.
  • Superior electrical insulation and mechanical strength at elevated temperatures.
