a) Elemental boron rarely exists in its pure form in nature, but in the form of orthoboric acid or borate. It transmits some infrared rays. Although it is a good electrical conductor at high temperatures, the electrical conductivity of boron will greatly decrease at room temperature.
b) Amorphous boron is a brown powder; while crystalline boron is black, very hard, and has poor conductor performance at room temperature. Element boron is used as a dopant in the semiconductor industry, while boron compounds play an important role as light-weight structural materials, pesticides and preservatives, and chemical synthesis reagents.
